Program Details

The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work (Couples Workshop) is a workshop based on the internationally acclaimed research of Dr. John Gottman as presented in his book, The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work. It is designed for couples in committed relationships and provides evidence-based tools to help couples improve relationship quality and satisfaction through teaching, demonstrations, and couples practice sessions aimed at:

Developing skills in managing conflict constructively
Gaining skills for perpetual and solvable problems
Improving friendship, fondness, and admiration
Creating a couple's sense of shared meaning
Maintaining gains throughout your lifetime

You will learn skills in the three key relationship areas:

  1. Conflict Management
  2. Strengthening a couple’s friendship
  3. Creating a couple’s sense of shared purpose and meaning

The workshop includes lectures, demonstrations, videos, and private couples exercises. The activities are fun, insightful, and informative! There is no need to worry about sharing your personal problems in front of others (we don’t do any group sharing in this workshop!)

What is the Gottman Method?

This workshop is based on the four decades of acclaimed research by Dr. John Gottman and Nan Silver, which was published in their New York Times Bestseller, The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work.  Dr. Gottman is a world-renowned researcher and therapist in relationship stability.

Who Should Attend?

Couples that would benefit from this workshop:

Pre-engaged
Engaged
Everyone from newlyweds to seniors
Those wishing to enhance a positive relationship
Those wishing to gain conflict management skills

This workshop is for almost all couples:

Those who are currently seeing a couple's therapist, those who are not seeing a couple's therapist, those waiting to see a couple's therapist, and those whose spouses are unwilling to do couples therapy but would attend a relationship enhancement class.

If your relationship is strong, this class will provide you with tools and insights to make your relationship even better. If you couple have a distressed relationship, this class can provide a road map for repair. In addition, many clinicians and their partners attend this class as a means of personally experiencing the Gottman Method and find it to be personally enriching and a great professional resource.

Details:

Couples are required to be in the same space with one another in order to complete the practice material together. This is NOT appropriate for couples experiencing untreated addiction, severe mental health concerns, or any type of abuse.

Couples are NOT required to be in therapy together or separately to attend this workshop. This is NOT group therapy; it is a psycho-educational group that provides tools and strategies for more effective communication and connection in relationships.
