What is the Gottman Method?

This workshop is based on the four decades of acclaimed research by Dr. John Gottman and Nan Silver as published in their New York Times Bestseller, The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work.  Dr. Gottman is a world-renowned researcher and therapist in relationship stability.

You will learn skills in the three key relationship areas:

  • Conflict Management

  • Strengthening a couple’s friendship

  • Creating a couple’s sense of shared purpose and meaning

The workshop includes lectures, demonstrations, videos, and private couples exercises. The activities are fun, insightful, and informative! There is no need to worry about sharing your personal problems in front of others (we don’t do any group sharing in this workshop!)

Anonymous Questions

In addition to the Seven Principles, couples are encouraged to submit their questions anonymously, so that Carrie-Lynn can dive deeper into those common problem areas and ensure this workshop is tailored to you!

This workshop is for almost all couples

Those who are currently seeing a couple's therapist, those who are not seeing a couple's therapist, those waiting to see a couple's therapist, and those whose spouses are unwilling to do couples therapy but would attend a relationship enhancement class.

If your relationship is strong, this class will provide you with tools and insights to make your relationship even better. If you have a distressed relationship, this class can provide a road map for repair. In addition, many clinicians and their partners attend this class as a means of personally experiencing the Gottman Method and find it to be personally enriching and a great professional resource.

I'm Carrie-Lynn

I am a Registered Social Worker and Psychotherapist who has a deep passion for working with couples. I have trained in Levels 1 and 2 of the Gottman Method for couples therapy and am so excited to have had the opportunity to be trained as a Seven Principles Leader to help even more couples reconnect and feel confident in their relationship.

I will be celebrating 17 years with my partner, and am no stranger to using the seven principles in my own relationship.

I loves to infuse humour into my work and believe that working on your relationship can be joyful and fun!

"Never above you. Never below you. Always beside you."

Common Questions

Am I required to be on-screen or share personal information in this group?

No! On-screen participation is optional. We do encourage couples to use the chat to get the most of the workshop, however, on-screen participation is optional.

We do not explore any personal details about your relationship and all questions about your relationship can be asked anonymously via chat.

What should we expect in the group?

The 7P workshop is a virtual group offered over zoom. The 7P workshop will offer practical tools and strategies for enhancing friendship, communication and connection and managing conflict. We will explore each strategy, its importance, how to use it effectively and then couples will have an opportunity to practice off-screen and receive support from Carrie-Lynn, if needed.  Couples will then be assigned a strategy to practice on their own to enhance their skills outside of group.

What if I have to miss a session. Can I still register?

Yes, absolutely! While we do not record weekly sessions, we do provide a weekly review of each principle at the beginning of each session.

Who is this workshop for? Can any couple register?

This workshop is for MOST couples: engaged, common-law, couples seeking fertility treatments, expecting couples, new parents, seasoned parents.

Those who are experiencing severe mental health concerns, active/untreated addictions, or experiencing any type of abuse are encouraged to pursue individual and couples therapy.

Wondering if you are the right fit? Feel free to email us directly: [email protected]

Is this workshop the same as couples therapy?

It is not, however it is a wonderful starting point for many couples. This workshop is not designed to replace couples therapy, however what we know is that many couples simply need an opportunity to connect and be held accountable to sit down with one another and enhance their ability to understand and connect with one another.

What we love about this workshop, is that it is a cost-effective way for couples to quickly and effectively learn the tools and strategies to enhance their friendship, improve communication and conflict management and feel heard and seen. To put this into perspective, the workshop is less than the cost of TWO couples therapy sessions!

Do both partners need to attend?

Yes! Each workshop does involve partner exercises in which both partners need to participate. If you or your partner must miss one session, the other partner may attend, however it is strongly encouraged that you both attend as many sessions as possible.

The booster sessions (3 sessions following group) will be recorded and live attendance is not mandatory.

What is the cost and what’s included?

The early-bird rate is $450 per couple. This typically closes two weeks prior to the end of registration (please see details on our registration page). The regular rate is $500 per couple. The cost of group is covered by most insurance providers.

Please see our “What’s included” section for more information.

I’m in Nova Scotia, am I able to attend?

Yes! Our workshop is offered at 8pm eastern time, however if you can make it, NS residents are more than welcome to attend! All Ontario residents are welcome to attend as well.

From another province? Please reach out to: [email protected] to discuss further.

I really want to attend, but my partner is hesitant. What should I do?

I can honestly say, that any partner who has ever expressed hesitancy has walked away from this group incredibly satisfied and happy that they’ve attended! If you and your partner would like to meet with me for a 15-min meet and greet to discuss the group and what to expect, feel free to reach out to: [email protected] to book

How often is 7P offered?

Our 7P is offered in the winter and in the fall (with breaks in the spring and summer). If you are debating, don’t wait! Our groups fill up fast and our couples are often waiting months before the next group begins.

To find out more about our 7P dates, head to our registration page. You also have the option of adding yourself to the waitlist and will be emailed once registration opens!

How do I receive my Couple's Guide?

The couple's guide is sent directly through email from the Gottmann Institute. Carrie-Lynn will provide them with your email after purchase and they will contact you directly.
