Birth Trauma Therapy

Compassionate support for trauma after childbirth—online, across Canada.

Does this sound like you?

Maybe your birth felt chaotic, terrifying, or completely out of your control.
Maybe you find yourself replaying moments in your head, wondering why the memories won’t settle.

Maybe something shifted in you that day—and while others say to be grateful, you feel like something important was taken from you.

Perhaps you're avoiding medical appointments or conversations about birth. Perhaps the thought of another pregnancy fills you with dread. Or maybe you’ve tucked it all away, unsure how to begin making sense of it.

If any of this feels familiar, it might be birth trauma. And you're not alone.

You’re Not Overreacting—You’re Responding to Trauma

Birth trauma doesn’t depend only on what happened medically—it’s about how you felt.  Even births that appear “normal” or medically routine can leave deep emotional wounds if you felt unsafe, powerless, dismissed, or scared. That experience matters.

You may be surprised by how intense your reactions feel. Or how long they’ve lasted. You might be exhausted, anxious, irritable, disconnected from your baby—or from yourself. None of this means you’re broken. It means you’ve been through something hard, and your body and mind are still carrying it.
You’re not imagining it. This happens far more often than people talk about:

  • Up to 1 in 3 birthing parents describe their birth as traumatic.
  • Around 1 in 20 develop postpartum PTSD—and for those with emergency births or complications, the risk rises to 1 in 5.
  • Nearly 1 in 4 experience trauma symptoms like flashbacks, anxiety, or numbness in the weeks following birth.

What Does Birth Trauma Look Like?

  • Flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive memories of the birth
  • Panic or anxiety when discussing childbirth
  • Anxiety at medical appointments, hospitals, or even around future pregnancy plans
  • Feelings of guilt, shame, anger, irritability, or emotional numbness
  • Trouble sleeping or relaxing, even when everything seems “fine”
  • Feeling disconnected from your baby—or from yourself

You may feel like no one understands. But we do.

Our Approach

What to Expect

At Bloom Psychotherapy, we have a team of therapists across Canada who are specially trained in birth trauma and perinatal mental health. We understand how layered and lonely birth trauma can feel. Our therapists are specially trained in perinatal mental health and birth trauma recovery. More importantly, we show up with warmth, patience, and deep respect for your story—however messy or incomplete it may feel right now.

There’s no pressure to retell everything at once. We go at your pace. You don’t have to be “ready”—just willing to start.

This is not general therapy—it’s trauma-informed care designed for the unique challenges of postpartum trauma.

Specialized Modalities

We use evidence-based approaches like:

  • EMDR for birth trauma
  • Trauma-Focused CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)
  • Trauma-Informed Birth Story Processing
  • Somatic and nervous system regulation techniques
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy for relationship repair

But therapy isn’t just about tools—it’s about being held through your healing. That’s what we do best.
